Nitrite is produced as an intermediate in the nitrification in sewage treatment plants. A high level of nitrite in cooling lubricants indicates a microbiological contamination of the circuit. Nitrite has to be controlled in aquariums in order to ensure optimal living conditions for aquatic life.
